If you have decided to replace the coil springs on your vehicle, you need to use specialized equipment and techniques that can get the job done. Step 1 – Vehicle Raising Techniques

The initial step that must be taken is to raise your vehicle up to a higher level, preferably high enough off of the ground so that you can easily access the springs. This can be done by using a car jack, preferably around the engine cradle area, in order to be as safe as possible. Additionally, hydraulic jacks would be ideal, allowing you to support the suspension as the vehicle rises.

Preventative measures should be taken to ensure that the car does not slip off of the Jack you are using. Prior to moving the car up, always loosen the nuts on the wheels.

Step 2 – Wheel Removal

After the car has been raised to the proper height, the front wheels need to come off. When you do this, it will depend upon what type of vehicle you are working on as to how fast this process can occur. Different vehicles must be handled in unique ways, requiring you to use a removal process for the vehicle that you are trying to repair.

Step 3 – Ball Joint Tips

Removing the lower ball joint, specifically from the control arm, is the next step of this process. The socket that you are using must fit properly for this to work. Using a pickle fork might be the best strategy as it will allow you to go in between the spindle and the control arm. This will allow you to separate the friction fit that is between the two. After the jack is in position, you will then have the ability to take the control arm off of the spindle stud.

Step 4 – Take The Strut Off

After you have opened the hood, you will see three mounting bolts which are used to keep the strut affixed to the body of the vehicle. You will need to undo all of the nuts. Once done, you can slip the strut off, removing it from the vehicle itself. All of the nuts need to be placed in a safe and memorable position, primarily so that you can use them later with your replacement parts. That is because coil springs that you purchase will not come with nuts.

Step 5 – Time To Compress The Coil

Safety should be your primary concern when you are removing the coil directly off of the strut. In fact, the coil springs have to be compressed prior to removing the bolt which is located at the very top of the strut. This can be dangerous if the coil unwinds, causing the spring to do something erratic or harmful. The compression brackets should be used at 180°, which is opposite each other, and then you will tighten them with 10 turns before you swap positions. Once the compression phase is over, you can take out the holding bolt, which is also above the strut so that you can remove the coil.

Step 6 – Install Your New Coil Spring

Compressing the new spring before putting it into your vehicle is the next step. All of the methods you have used regarding compression must be utilized once again, keeping them in 180° opposing angles. Once this is tightened, you can then put the new spring directly on the strut. Now you will look at the strut, specifically at its base, and you will see a groove that is toward the lower end of the coil spring in which this will sit and easily slip into. You’re going to put it into that groove, and subsequently, begin to tighten the top boat. Once the brand-new coil spring is in place and completely secured, the compression tool can be removed.

Step 7 – Reinstall Your Strut

What you will need to do now is essentially the reversal of the techniques that were utilized to take everything off so that the strut can be replaced within the retaining whole and also secure the three holding bolts. You will then want to Jack the rotor up again and subsequently bolt the spindle, as well as the control arm, back into place. If you follow this simple reverse procedure, you can then replace the remaining parts.
